Prospects for a Transhuman Mind

This is a presentation by Leda Cosmides (from the reading on evolutionary psychology) talking at a conference of people concerned with human immortality through the uses of present and future state-of-the-art technology.

The talk is interesting in and of itself, but I thought you guys might find it useful to understand the relationship to human consciousness and its evolutionary roots from the expert herself.

I've only listened to about 20 minutes of this so far, but have found that I don't really agree with the Transhuman concept. What makes us human and separate from other animals is that we have used culture to survive in our environment. Meaning - we have come up with external sources, ie: clothes, technology, etc. to combat environmental forces, whereas other animals would adapt to their environment through physical evolutionary means...fur, size, etc. If we are just continually adapting to our environment through technology, then that shouldn't make us transhuman, it should ultimately signify what it is to be human. Any thoughts?
